One evening the path to the garden went dark. The little lantern by the gate was missing. Little Miss Squishy packed her pocket with a pencil, a ribbon and her most careful listening ears.
She found a warm glow behind the watering cans. A moth had landed on the lantern. Next to it were three other small lights: a firefly, a window and a neighbor carrying a candle.
She asked everyone to light the path for a minute. From the gate to the garden, the lights appeared one by one. Mr. Squishy could see the steps. Mrs. Squishy could see a loose wire to repair in the morning.
Little Miss Squishy drew the lights as stars on her map. She kept the lantern, and the memory of all the neighbors who had helped carry the night.
